Sensitive Skin
Maybe your feelings don’t get hurt that often, but you still have that one thing that is extremely sensitive: your skin.
Navigating your skincare when you have sensitive skin can be tricky. There are tons of ingredients that can inflame, irritate, and trigger your skin… yikes.
While knowing which ingredients to avoid is helpful, we believe in focusing on the good things. As in, the ingredients that will soothe and soften sensitive skin to counteract or prevent any irritation.
This is why we’ve come up with a list of ingredients that will benefit your sensitive skin. Look out for these in your skincare products!
What Is Sensitive Skin?
But before we begin, it’s best to define sensitive skin. This is because people claim to have sensitive skin when they actually don’t. Sometimes, it’s the products that are the problem, not you!
For example, someone may use a harsh exfoliator (such as one containing walnut shells), and then claim to have sensitive skin when their face starts burning bright red. While this scenario may indicate that you have sensitive skin, it’s more likely than not that the product itself is just waaay too harsh for your precious skin.
So is it you, or your products?
You’ll know you have sensitive skin if you struggle with the following symptoms:
- Your skin reacts (in the form of itchiness, redness, irritation, or rashes) to loads of different products and household items.
- You notice redness on your face often after using products.
- You develop a lot of rashes.
- You may experience lots of acne breakouts.
- You may have super dry skin that can crack and bleed.
Do some of these symptoms sound familiar to you? Then you may have sensitive skin!
Best Ingredients for Sensitive Skin
There’s nothing to worry about, though. There are tons of ingredients that you can use to soothe your skin and alleviate any burning, redness, or itching. These ingredients are mild and are not considered irritants, so they shouldn’t be the cause of any flare ups.
Aloe Vera
Maybe you were expecting this one. Aloe vera is known for its soothing and cooling properties, so much that a lot of people use it as a remedy to sunburns!
And if it can soothe your sunburn, it can definitely do the same for your skin. The deeply hydrating and nourishing effects of the plant extract will put your skin at ease.
Chamomile Extract
Mmmm, that delicious herb that you’re told to drink if you have trouble sleeping at night. Not only can it ease your mind and body, but also your skin (when applied topically).
Chamomile contains healing and anti-inflammatory properties that can work to rejuvenate and calm sensitive skin. Because of its anti-inflammatory properties, it’s also great for acne-prone skin!
Marshmallow Root Extract
Okay, we know you’re thinking of that delicious fluffy delicacy, but marshmallow root is actually a great ingredient for sensitive skin!
Marshmallow root helps retain any moisture (alleviating dryness) and reduce any redness and irritation, making it another ingredient to look out for when purchasing products for sensitive skin.
Shea Butter
This commonly used ingredient in the beauty industry is another great addition to your sensitive skin list, particularly if you also struggle from dryness and flaking.
Not only does it plump and nourish the skin, but it also hydrates and calms it from any irritation. Research also shows that it may be helpful in fading acne scars!
Calendula Extract
This extract comes from marigold flowers, and is the perfect companion for sensitive skin. Calendula extract is known for its irritation-alleviating benefits!
Due to its anti-inflammatory properties, this ingredient has been shown to reduce any signs of discomfort and irritation on the skin. It also may strengthen the skin’s defense system against irritations- we’ll take some calendula extract now, please!
Best Way To Soothe Irritated Skin
As you can probably tell, there is a healthy solution for sensitive skin: natural extracts, given as gifts from the earth, to calm your skin.
Look out for these ingredients in your skincare products, and your skin will hopefully find some form of relief.
Hey, skin, you don’t have to be so irritated all the time anymore!
